United Dominion Realty Trust
Before it was annexed to become a state, Hawaii was an island full of indigenous people whose main desire was to rule a sovereign nation. As time progressed, the island became attractive to many countries, and in the end, the monarchy of Hawaii was overthrown, and the royal families were ignored and exiled. The monarchy was steeped in traditional Hawaiian customs, but those were fading as haole, or foreign residents, began to live on the islands. As Western civilization encroached Hawaii, the dominion was quickly coming to a close. The last sovereign was unlike the preceding leaders in one key element. This ruler was Queen Lili’uokalani Lydia Kamekaha. She was the first and only ruling queen in the history of the royal Hawaiian family.
Love and Marriage
Lili’uokalani Lydia Kamekaha, whose nickname from childhood was Liliu, had a strong family background. At birth she was a part of an old Hawaiian tradition called hanai, which was where families would give some of their children away to be raised by other families. Her adoptive parents, Albert and Konia Paki, died when Liliu was still too young to live on her own, so she was sent to live with her hanai sister, Bernice Pauahi Bishop and her husband.
