It was back on January 22 (of this year) that a contingent from the University of Southern California descended on the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis to appeal its case for an alleviation of the sanctions that were levied on its storied football program last June. Among those pleading the university's case were relative newcomers to their respective positions at the school: USC President Max Nikias and Athletic Director Pat Haden.
Is Time On Their Side?
Although a deferment on an initial response to or appeal of beforehand meted out sanctions by the NCAA's Infractions Committee can take weeks if not months, this particular adjournment is quickly becoming both agonizingly and puzzlingly long. Unlike the basketball program, which was also under close scrutiny by the NCAA and which eventually self-imposed sanctions in reaction to illegal benefits awarded to former star player O.J. Mayo, the football program chose not to act in kind. In hindsight, it is a decision that former AD Mike Garrett should have made, which would have most likely fended off the NCAA attack dogs from inflicting any further damage.
But it still doesn't explain the protracted wait for a reply from Indianapolis. Yet, in the NCAA's defense, they appear to have their hands full, what with the ongoing implosion at Ohio State and repeatedly nagging transgressions at schools such as Auburn University. Is it possible that college sports' organizational and ruling body is retooling its overall regulatory philosophy, with a specific emphasis on promoting a more objective enforcement agenda?
