Even the paranormal-sceptical could do far worse than to make the Fort Lauderdale Ghost Tour one of their first stops in South Florida. The tour, operated by John Marc Carr, author of Haunted Fort Lauderdale, offers a brief history of the area, a pleasant evening walk along Fort Lauderdale’s scenic riverfront, and a peek at several local historical museums, restaurants and watering holes. The tours begin on Friday and Saturday evenings on Las Olas Boulevard, an avenue full of trendy shopping and dining.

Restless Settlers Linger On Las Olas Riverfront

Wearing a short-sleeved shirt with skulls on it and carrying an old lantern, Carr’s first stop is the Stranahan House on Las Olas. The house was home to Frank Stranahan, a riverboat captain who took travelers from Fort Lauderdale to Miami in the pre-railroad days. Terminally ill in his later life, Stranahan drowned himself in the river, and his ghost is said to repeat the scene of the suicide in front of dismayed tourists. Stranahans wife, Ivy, Fort Lauderdale’s first school teacher, taunts visitors she does not like by blowing in their ears, Carr explains. As Fort Lauderdale’s “most haunted house,” the Stranahan also hosts the spirits of a jilted young pregnant woman and a flirtatious young man who both met untimely deaths in the house.
