There were many signs Wednesday night that life has changed at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Gordon Hayward and Shelvin Mack were in the stands and not on the floor.

The floor was refinished and featured a corporate logo.

Butler’s white Nike home uniforms were unveiled.

Also new: Losing an exhibition game to an NCAA Division II opponent.

Northern State scored the final 12 points to beat the Bulldogs 53-50, stunning a turnout of 5,544 and reinforcing all doubts about this season’s version of  Butler.

The Bulldogs didn’t shoot 19 percent, as they did in April’s NCAA championship loss to Connecticut. They didn’t shoot accurately, either.

It is inappropriate to overreact to one outcome, and especially an exhibition game. However, what appeared to be Butler’s four weaknesses were underscored:

Offensive execution and shooting: The Bulldogs don’t have many shooters. They shot 33 percent (18-of-55) from the field and 17 percent (3-of-18) on 3-pointers. They can win with that percentage only by dominating the offensive boards, and they did not. If the Dawgs are going to have that many misses, they must retrieve more than 13, as they did against Northern State. Butler committed nine turnovers, an acceptable amount. Coach Brad Stevens said the Bulldogs missed shots they have been making in practice, and he acknowledged that practice is not like a game. Inevitably, Butler will need Chase Stigall and Chrishawn Hopkins to become reliable 3-point threats.

Free throws: Andrew Smith, Khyle Marshall, Stigall and Ronald Nored aren’t great foul shooters. Smith was the most accurate last season, and he was 8-of-11 vs. Northern State until missing the front end of a one-and-one with 38 seconds left. Butler was 11-of-21 overall, and that 52 percent mark might not be an aberration. It is difficult to close out victories if foul shooting is poor. Butler was 2-of-7 in the second half.

End of shot clock: This is an issue that won’t be resolved easily, if at all. Hayward took care of that in 2010 and Mack in 2011. Indeed, Mack covered for many offensive shortcomings during the recent NCAA Tournament run. Hopkins missed the Northern State game because of a concussion, and probably will be sidelined for Saturday’s exhibition vs. Franklin College. Hopkins is an option at the end of the clock because he can create his own shot. Nored and freshman Roosevelt Jones can perhaps create as the clock winds down, but outside shooting is not their strength and thus defenders can back off and prevent penetration.

Youth and inexperience: Nine of Butler’s 14 eligible players are freshmen or sophomores. None of the four scholarship freshmen was outstanding, although Jones made some nice moves, scoring once out of Butler’s familiar weave. Kameron Woods played 24 minutes, Jones 22, Jackson Aldridge 13 and Andrew Smeathers 2. Smeathers had three fouls in his two-minute stint, which was regrettable because he has a skill (3-point shooting) that Butler needs.

“I played too few guys,” Stevens said, “and those guys probably played too many minutes.”

Not sure about that, but it was better than publicly ripping into young players whose confidence might be fragile.

Butler’s pluses? There weren’t many.

Smith was active and forceful, collecting 19 points and eight rebounds in 30 minutes. He made one 3-pointer, something he has been refining during the off-season. Although Butler doesn’t want its 6-foot-11 center drifting outside often, that maneuver does stress the defense and, candidly, Smith shoots 3s about as well as any of his teammates.

The Bulldogs forced Northern State into 18 turnovers, and their defense isn’t designed to create many turnovers. They might need to do so this season in order to score in transition.

Smith and Marshall combined for 20 of the Bulldogs’ 25 second-half points, a sign that they were getting the ball in the hands of the right people. But they need more than two scorers.

In recent seasons, there have been multiple occurrences of a Division II opponent upsetting a national power in an exhibition: Findlay over Ohio State, Grand Valley State over Michigan State, LeMoyne over Syracuse, Indianapolis over Tennessee, Seattle Pacific over Arizona (last week).

Certainly, this Butler team is vulnerable and needs accelerated growth to reach the NCAA Tournament for a sixth year in a row. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, they have 10 days between Northern State and the real opener Nov. 12 at Evansville.

But Butler faces an unforgiving schedule. If it goes 0-6 against six elite opponents (Louisville, Indiana, Xavier, Purdue, Gonzaga, Stanford) and also loses at Evansville and Ball State, it would be 5-8 heading into New Year’s weekend. That’s essentially worst-case scenario. Butler has a clever coaching staff and some talented parts. If those parts come together soon, Northern State could be forgotten before November is over. If not, Butler will scuffle in the Horizon League.

Thanks to Ronald Nored for allowing me to shadow him Wednesday as he was student teaching a third-grade class at North Wayne Elementary School in Indianapolis. Look for my story later this season.
