Last time I was in London, two months ago, I visited a peaceful capital city where life was calm and orderly, the streets were safe, the public transport was clean and efficient and where preparations were well under way for the 2012 Olympics. I wrote then about the sense of preparation and purpose which seemed to be accompanying London's run up to the Olympic Games.

Like the majority of the population of the UK, I was shocked, saddened and appalled by the scenes broadcast yesterday evening and throughout the night of riots, looting and wanton destruction in the heart of the capital.

Is the current unacceptable situation in many of Britain's urban centres mere "criminality" as described by Theresa May? In fact, if such "criminality" has generated spontaneously overnight, surely this is not something to be lightly dismissed? Or have the politicians misread the signals once more and is the unrest of recent days a symptom of something more serious?
